Experience
Founder & Web Developer
Self-Employed - Remote
June 2025 - Present
Actively operate two ventures under one roof: a freelance
web development practice serving small-business clients,
and an independently owned and operated e-commerce
business.
Freelance Web Development
- Build custom-coded and CMS-based websites for small-business clients, recommending the platform that fits each client's goals, audience, and budget (custom code, Shopify, WordPress, and others) rather than defaulting to one toolset.
- Design and test every build against WCAG 2.1, cross-checking multiple independent accessibility tools alongside manual review of color contrast, alt text, form labeling, keyboard navigation, and mobile tap-target sizing. WebAIM's 2026 analysis found detectable failures of this kind on roughly 96% of home pages, an increasingly common trigger for accessibility demand letters against small businesses.
- Develop mobile-first, responsive layouts and verify them on real phones, tablets, and browsers rather than a single simulator.
- Favor clean semantic HTML, genuine performance and image-optimization testing, and correct sitemap, robots, and descriptive meta-tag configuration over page-builder bloat.
- Diagnose problems to their root cause and fix what is actually broken rather than masking symptoms with overlays or one-off visual patches, applying the same methodical, verify-and-test process built through hands-on automotive diagnostic work.
- Recent client build: libertisauto.com, a responsive Bootstrap site developed in close collaboration with the shop owner of an automotive business, now serving as their live website.
- Test every build against Google Lighthouse and WebAIM WAVE for performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO before launch, this resume site and my portfolio included.
Independent E-Commerce Venture
- Built and customized a Shopify storefront using Liquid, custom filtering and taxonomy architecture, and metafield-driven product data structures.
- Led performance and accessibility optimization work, including Lighthouse auditing, image compression workflows, color-contrast testing, and WCAG-compliant mobile tap-target sizing via custom Liquid edits.
- Manage multi-platform sales operations across Shopify, eBay, and Poshmark, including platform-specific pricing strategy, cross-listing workflows, shipping/fulfillment integration, and domain/DNS management (Namecheap).
- Completed Washington State's Self-Employment Assistance Program (SEAP), self-funded coursework covering business operations, marketing strategy, tax compliance, and growth planning.
- Established core business infrastructure independently, including registered agent and privacy protection, licensing, and tax registration, informing hands-on website audits that go beyond automated "SEO report" bots.
- Apply hands-on graphic design skills using Affinity for brand identity, product photography, retouching, and marketing materials.
"I'm not very technical when it comes to websites, but Matt made
the whole process easy and really listened to what I wanted. He took
my ideas and turned them into a professional website that truly
represents my business. I'm very happy with the final result and
would absolutely recommend him to any business owner looking for
someone who is easy to work with and genuinely cares about doing a
good job."

NetRaising - Remote from Seattle, WA to Portland, OR
March 2024 - June 2025
- Built and launched responsive websites and landing pages in ExpressionEngine CMS for nonprofit clients, combining CMS templating (tags, conditional logic, custom fields) with front-end development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), MachForm integration, and database/API integrations supporting content and data management.
- Delivered full site builds for Open Adoption & Family Services, the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board, and AtoZ Staffing, each responsive across phone, tablet, and desktop.
- Provided ongoing webmaster support and site administration across more than a dozen active nonprofit sites, including Returning Veterans Project, Portland Youth Philharmonic, the Coalition of Community Health Clinics, and REACH CDC, spanning healthcare, veterans services, crisis support, affordable housing, and the arts, covering content updates, maintenance, troubleshooting, cPanel-based hosting, and domain configuration.
- Conducted quality assurance and accessibility reviews while solving complex design and technical challenges, prioritizing accessibility (WCAG standards), SEO, and performance optimization, consistently achieving high scores using Lighthouse and color-contrast testing, and validating each site through peer code review and multiple independent accessibility, markup, and speed tools before launch.
- Applied lean, low-bandwidth development practices, a lightweight CSS framework, lazy loading, image optimization, and minimal scripting, for faster mobile performance and a smaller energy footprint.
- Collaborated with designers and stakeholders to produce mobile, tablet, and desktop-ready websites, as well as provided one-on-one client training and support to ensure a smooth handoff and ongoing site management.
"Matt is becoming the rare web developer whose customer service
savvy is in balance with his coding skills and will thrive as part
of a development team that allows him to interact with clients."

Automotive Technician, Vehicle Safety Inspector & Inventory Operations
California & Washington
2001 - 2020
Held a range of distinct roles across automotive service and
inventory operations, including Automotive Technician positions
across specialty and general shops (import/exotic vehicle
service, Subaru dyno and performance tuning, everyday maintenance
and repair, and RV service), Head Vehicle Safety Inspector (KNA
Solutions, contracted to Lyft's Seattle facility), and Inventory
Department Lead (Centric Parts). Balanced full-time work with
college coursework, ASE certifications, and industry training,
sometimes holding multiple roles simultaneously. Earlier roles in
retail and customer service, along with years spent in small,
independently owned repair shops, further developed
communication and client-relations skills that complemented
later technical and operational work. Following pandemic-era
disruption and the end of the KNA Solutions contract placement,
completed a Washington State ESD-supported worker retraining
program, leading to formal web development education at Edmonds
College and a transition into web development and consulting.
- Performed advanced diagnostics on mechanical and electrical systems using wiring schematics, structured testing methods, drivability diagnostics, oscilloscope waveform analysis, and module programming, a specialization built across specialty and general repair shops.
- Managed shop operations as a service writer and technician, including parts management, and explained complex issues to clients in accessible terms.
- Led vehicle safety inspection teams at KNA Solutions, ensuring compliance with city and state regulations, while training and mentoring junior technicians.
- Founded and led a new caliper inventory department at Centric Parts, distinct from the existing general small-parts inventory operation, directing multi-million-dollar inventory and leading a team of 6-8. Certified on multiple material-handling equipment types, including forklift (Drexel) and electric pallet jack, and used Excel for inventory tracking and reporting.
- Tackled complex technical challenges, including high-performance vehicles, custom modifications, and specialized mechanical systems.
